Australian
Society of Musicology and Composition
Patron
His Excellency
Major General Michael Jeffery, AC, CVO, MC (Retd),
Governor-General of
the Commonwealth of Australia
Do you Compose, Research or Perform?…….
The
Australian Society of Musicology and Composition (ASMC) aims to promote the
study of musicology and composition in Australia, especially within the private
music teaching sphere. To encourage such activities, the ASMC offers an
assessment service, readily accessible to all Australian musicians (and
especially private teachers and students). In addition to their intended
helpfulness and instructional value, ASMC assessments lead to the possible
award of Fellowship, Licentiateship or Associateship diplomas, in each of the
disciplines of musicology, composition, performance (with a creative or
research element) and music education (composition or research activities of a
music educational nature).
The
ASMC is governed by a Council of leading Australian composers, musicologists
and music educationalists. For details of our Executive Officers and Council
members, please refer to our Regulations.
How the Process Works
Candidates
initially submit a sample of their work, which demonstrates their skills and
abilities. The requirements for submissions for each of the disciplines are
summaries below:
Composition-
A single major composition, or a small folio of composition, which may be in
any style and for any medium. Recordings and analyses are optional.
Musicology-
A paper of 3,000-8,000 words length, presenting original musical research or
analysis.
Performance-
A video recording of a performance, which must include original composition or
improvisations, or which is supported by original research, or presents
contemporary Australian repertoire
Music Education- A paper presenting research on a topic in music education, or
compositions of a pedagogical nature, or a new method or textbook presenting
original methodology.
We
will be happy to advise you as to the suitability of any proposed submission.
Your submission will be assessed by an appointed examiner, who may recommend
admission to the ASMC as Fellow, Licentiate or Associate in composition,
musicology, performance, or music education, according to the merits and nature
of the work. Please refer to our Regulations for
detailed information.
Who Will Assess My Work?
The
academic regulations of the ASMC require that all examiners hold a higher degree
from an Australian university, a recognised fellowship diploma, and be
employed, or have been employed, on the academic staff of an Australian
tertiary institution. In addition to these guidelines, a submission in a
particular genre (e.g. jazz) will, where possible, be assessed by someone known
for their expertise in that area.
Fees
A
fee of $150 applies for diploma candidates, payable with the submission.
